Music videos are replaced by fan videos, mash ups and mock videos and the professional directors have to look elsewhere for work while film students take over and do the job putting the local indie band on YouTube?
That's one way of putting it - another that it was way too easy to gain fame on MTV. Too many slick but ultimately forgettable clips that resemble what they were - ads to make people buy the album.
Today if you're an aspiring director, you have to get the right idea, be inventive or shocking or brilliant enough for the video to go viral and gain YouTube fame. Oh and you probably have to finance the shoot yourself or get donations from friends and family of the band...
