Decline in Film and TV commercial production continues in Los Angeles

FilmLA, the non-profit organisation that oversees the issuance of film permits in the Los Angeles area, has released its film production data for the second quarter. Things are looking exceptionally grim for film and TV commercial production in Los Angeles. Here is a summary of the data:

- Film production: 52.5% decline relative to 2008;

- Film production in Los Angeles has experienced double-digit percentage rates of decline for four consecutive quarters;

- TV commercial production: 31.1% year-to-date decline;

- TV sitcoms: 37.5% year-to-date decline;

- TV reality: 12% year-to-date decline.

Things are looking a little better for TV dramas and pilots:

- TV dramas: 9.5% year-to-date growth;

- TV pilots: 10.8% year-to-date growth.

FilmLA President Paul Audley said that they are “deeply concerned about our long-term loss of commercial and feature film production.” No kidding.
