Production design and your project's color palette(Page 7 of 7) Copyright © 2007 LAvideoFilmmaker.com - All Rights Reserved. _______________________________________________________________
The color scheme or color palette of a film or video - the colors of the clothes, props and backgrounds, essentially - is another major consideration. The problem with most digital movies is not that they used the wrong color scheme - the problem is that they did not use one at all. They gave no thought to what colors would appear in the movie, and just shot what was available. What you should be devoting a lot of thought to is, for instance, the color an actor's top should be in a given shot, and what color the background should be. If the color you want as the background is a murky blue, you paint it to look murky blue; alternatively, you can find a location that has the look you want. Whatever you do, a lot of thought and preparation must go into your project's color palette if you want top results. The use of color is very important to the overall look of a project; like most other things, although the viewer may not be discussing the color palette after watching your work, you can rest assured that the color scheme - or lack thereof - most certainly affected their perception of it. In big-budget Hollywood movies a lot of attention is given to the color of even the finest detail, and with good reason! ConclusionGive your project a cinematic treatment and its production value will go through the roof – and so will the impact you have on your viewers. The work ethic, approach and standards of excellence on your digital project should match those you would find on a film set - you might not have a huge budget, but you can compensate for that with energy and discipline. |
